Dembélé Delivers Historic First-Half Performance

France made a powerful statement ahead of the knockout stage as Ousmane Dembélé produced one of the tournament’s most memorable individual performances, scoring a first-half hat trick in a 4-1 victory over Norway on Friday at Gillette Stadium.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward found the net in the seventh, 20th and 32nd minutes, becoming the first player to score a World Cup first-half hat trick since Russia’s Oleg Salenko accomplished the feat against Cameroon during the 1994 tournament in the United States.

The explosive performance also thrust Dembélé into the Golden Boot race alongside several of the tournament’s biggest stars.

“It is a unique moment,” Dembélé said. “But the most important was to finish first of the group in the group stage, and we are focused on the round of 32, which is the most important.”

France Finishes Group Stage in Dominant Fashion

Already assured of advancing before kickoff, France showed no signs of easing up despite securing qualification.

The 2018 World Cup champions completed the group stage with three victories and an impressive 10 goals scored across their opening matches.

Désiré Doué capped the scoring deep into second-half stoppage time after Dembélé had already done the damage during a relentless opening half.

Despite the comfortable victory, Dembélé emphasized that France never considered slowing its approach.

“We want to win all our matches, but we remain focused,” Dembélé said.

France will now face one of the tournament’s best third-place finishers in the Round of 32 on Tuesday in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Mbappé Continues Creating Chances

Although Kylian Mbappé did not score after recording two goals in each of France’s previous victories over Senegal and Iraq, the captain remained a constant attacking threat.

He nearly opened the scoring just 21 seconds into the match when his powerful effort struck the crossbar before eventually assisting Dembélé’s opening goal minutes later.

Mbappé’s precise pass found Dembélé in open space, allowing the winger to fire across goalkeeper Egil Selvik for the game’s first goal.

The assist raised Mbappé’s World Cup career totals to 16 goals and four assists in only 17 tournament appearances.

Norway Responds Briefly But Cannot Keep Pace

Norway managed an immediate response after France’s second goal.

Thelo Aasgaard scored just 14 seconds after play restarted, briefly cutting the deficit to 2-1 and giving Norway hope of climbing back into the contest.

Those hopes disappeared less than nine minutes later when Dembélé completed his hat trick to restore France’s comfortable advantage.

Norway also had an opportunity early in the second half after Theo Hernandez was penalized for fouling Oscar Bobb inside the penalty area.

However, Jørgen Strand Larsen’s penalty kick was brilliantly saved by France goalkeeper Mike Maignan, preserving the two-goal cushion.

Norway Rests Key Players Ahead of Knockout Round

With qualification already secured, Norway manager Ståle Solbakken chose to rotate much of his starting lineup.

Ten regular starters, including star striker Erling Haaland, began the match on the bench as Norway prioritized rest before the knockout stage.

Solbakken said the scheduling made rotation unavoidable.

“The break that we had from the last game to this game was the shortest of any team. … So it’s a no-brainer,” he said.

He acknowledged supporters hoped to see Haaland play but stressed that advancing deep into the tournament remained the priority.

“The fans around Norway and also in the arena would have like to see Erling. But that is not really the issue. We want to proceed as long as we can in the tournament.”

Norway will face Ivory Coast in the Round of 32 on Tuesday in Arlington, Texas.

Historic Hat Trick Adds to World Cup Legacy

Dembélé’s three-goal performance joined a select list of World Cup milestones.

His first-half treble marked the tournament’s first opening-half hat trick in 32 years.

Historically, the fastest World Cup hat trick remains Hungary substitute László Kiss’s three goals in just 7 minutes and 42 seconds against El Salvador in 1982.

The quickest hat trick from kickoff still belongs to Austria’s Erich Probst, who scored three goals within the opening 24 minutes against Czechoslovakia during the 1954 World Cup.

Dembélé finished the match with four tournament goals before being substituted in the 65th minute for Bradley Barcola.

France Honors Didier Deschamps

The victory came during an emotional week for the French national team.

Head coach Didier Deschamps missed Friday’s match after returning to France following the death of his mother, Ginette Deschamps.

Before kickoff, French supporters unveiled a banner reading “AVEC TOI DIDIER” (“With you Didier”) in tribute to their longtime manager.

Assistant coach Guy Stéphan guided the team on the sidelines and confirmed afterward that Deschamps is expected to return for Saturday’s training session as France begins preparations for the knockout stage.
