Deep Look
Wembanyama Delivers Historic Playoff Debut Performance
Victor Wembanyama made an unforgettable postseason debut Sunday night, scoring 35 points to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 111-98 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 1 of their Western Conference first-round series.
The 7-foot-4 French star wasted no time asserting himself, scoring 21 points in the first half alone — the most ever recorded in the opening half of an NBA playoff debut since play-by-play tracking began in 1997.
By the end of the night, his 35-point performance set a new Spurs franchise record for a playoff debut, surpassing the 32 points scored by Hall of Famer Tim Duncan in 1998.
“It is obviously different, but we’ve been really good in the regular season,” Wembanyama said. “So, we have no reason to act differently or do anything different.”
Spurs Control Game with Balanced Offense and Defense
While Wembanyama led the way, San Antonio received strong support across the roster.
Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox each contributed 17 points while combining for 15 assists, helping orchestrate a smooth and efficient offensive performance.
The Spurs also made their presence felt defensively, limiting Portland to just 10-for-38 shooting from beyond the arc and outrebounding them 45-38.
San Antonio’s defensive intensity was especially evident in the third quarter, when the team rebuilt a double-digit lead after Portland attempted to close the gap.
Devin Vassell played a key role during that stretch, blocking shots and scoring eight consecutive points to swing momentum back in the Spurs’ favor.
“That’s what we’ve talked about, just not giving up on the play,” Vassell said. “Every possession matters, whether it’s the first possession in the first quarter or the last possession in the fourth quarter. Play to the whistle.”
Trail Blazers Struggle Despite Avdija’s Strong Night
Portland was led by Deni Avdija, who finished with 30 points and 10 rebounds in a strong individual effort.
Scoot Henderson added 18 points, continuing his development after being selected third overall in the 2023 NBA Draft behind Wembanyama and Brandon Miller.
Despite those contributions, the Trail Blazers struggled to keep pace due to poor perimeter shooting and difficulty handling San Antonio’s defensive pressure.
Portland head coach Tiago Splitter acknowledged the challenge after the game.
“The Spurs put you in tough positions,” Splitter said. “Against them, you’ve got to shoot the ball well from 3s. We didn’t. We’ve got to shoot the ball better.”
The Trail Blazers entered the playoffs as the No. 7 seed after defeating Phoenix in the play-in tournament, but they now face an uphill battle against a confident Spurs squad.
Electric Atmosphere Marks Spurs’ Playoff Return
Sunday’s game marked San Antonio’s first playoff appearance since 2019, ending a six-season postseason drought.
The sellout crowd at Frost Bank Center created an electric atmosphere, energized by the team’s resurgence and the emergence of a new franchise cornerstone.
Spurs legends Tim Duncan and David Robinson were seated courtside, witnessing what could be the beginning of a new era for the franchise.
San Antonio had previously built a dynasty with five NBA championships and 22 consecutive playoff appearances, and fans are once again dreaming big.
Much of that optimism centers around Wembanyama, who is already a finalist for both the NBA’s MVP and Defensive Player of the Year awards.
Wembanyama’s Highlights Showcase Superstar Potential
Wembanyama’s performance included several highlight-reel plays that demonstrated why he is considered one of the league’s brightest young stars.
In one standout sequence during the first quarter, he dribbled behind his back to evade Avdija near halfcourt, backed him down toward the top of the key, spun past him, and drove to the rim for a powerful two-handed dunk.
Moments like that energized the crowd and set the tone for a dominant Spurs performance.
His combination of size, skill, and mobility continues to create matchup problems for opposing defenses.
Spurs Take Early Series Lead with Game 2 Ahead
With the win, San Antonio takes a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.
Game 2 is scheduled for Tuesday night in San Antonio before the series shifts to Portland for Games 3 and 4.
The Spurs will look to build on their momentum, while the Trail Blazers will aim to adjust — particularly in their perimeter shooting — to stay competitive in the series.
If Sunday’s performance is any indication, Wembanyama may be ready to lead San Antonio deep into the playoffs in his very first postseason run.
