Deep Look

WASHINGTON (AP) — First lady Melania Trump spent Thursday visiting patients at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, joining young patients in making Fourth of July arts and crafts and bringing festive cheer ahead of the holiday.

Continuing a long tradition of first lady support for the pediatric center, Trump also toured the hospital’s Bunny Mellon Healing Garden, which she originally dedicated during her husband’s first term as a tribute to America’s first ladies.

The rooftop garden, named for philanthropist and famed gardener Rachel “Bunny” Mellon, who designed the White House Rose Garden during the Kennedy era, was adorned with patriotic decorations for Independence Day. The garden honors the enduring support first ladies have provided to the hospital, including the Christmas visits that began under Bess Truman.

Accompanied by Dale Haney, the White House’s chief groundskeeper, Trump inspected the planting of a new yellow rose bush, recently donated by the White House and added to the hospital garden earlier this week.

Later in her visit, the first lady was scheduled to spend time with patients in the hospital’s heart and kidney unit, offering comfort and encouragement.

On Thursday afternoon, Melania Trump was set to join President Donald Trump in the Oval Office for a significant meeting with Edan Alexander, the last known living American hostage held in Gaza, who was released in May.
