Deep Look: Arizona State Stuns No. 24 TCU With Late Rally and Game-Winning Field Goal
TEMPE, Ariz. — September 26, 2025
For the second straight week, Arizona State won at the buzzer — this time delivering a signature victory over a ranked opponent. Jesus Gomez’s 23-yard field goal with 1:14 remaining capped a furious comeback as the Sun Devils defeated No. 24 TCU 27-24 at Sun Devil Stadium.
The win not only lifted Arizona State to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Big 12 play, but also gave head coach Kenny Dillingham his most important win to date, one he credited to his team’s resilience.
“Every close game, our guys find ways to get it done in big moments,” Dillingham said. “It’s a testament to the character of this team.”
Sun Devils Erase 17-0 Deficit
It didn’t look promising early. TCU (3-1, 0-1 Big 12) stormed to a 17-0 lead in the second quarter, fueled by:
- Trent Battle’s 13-yard TD run
- Jeremy Payne’s 7-yard score
- A defensive stop on fourth down that set up a field goal
But quarterback Sam Leavitt sparked the turnaround. He connected with Jordyn Tyson on a 57-yard touchdown strike, then scrambled for a dazzling 24-yard run before punching in an 8-yard rushing TD to cut the deficit to 17-14 at halftime.
By game’s end, Leavitt had thrown for 278 yards and two touchdowns, both to Tyson, who finished with 126 receiving yards on eight catches. Running back Raleek Brown added 147 rushing yards, giving Arizona State the balance it needed.
“Down 17-0, things just weren’t going our way,” Leavitt said. “We’re a really tough team, and we just compete.”
Fourth-Quarter Drama
TCU briefly regained control in the fourth quarter when quarterback Josh Hoover scored on a 1-yard sneak, pushing the Frogs ahead 24-17. The Horned Frogs twice stopped Arizona State drives inside their own 5-yard line, seemingly poised to escape with a win.
But Arizona State’s defense refused to fold. Prince Dorbuh strip-sacked Hoover, setting up the Sun Devils at the TCU 15-yard line with under two minutes left. Moments earlier, Leavitt had found Tyson for a 4-yard TD to tie the game at 24-24.
That turnover set up Gomez, who had missed two earlier field goals, for redemption. Initially, the Sun Devils lined up to go for it on fourth-and-inches, but Dillingham sent Gomez out instead. He drilled the 23-yarder — one week after hitting a 43-yard game-winner against Baylor.
The defense sealed the win as Martell Hughes intercepted Hoover, his second pick of the night, to complete the comeback.
TCU’s Missed Opportunity
For TCU, the loss marked a collapse after a strong start. The Horned Frogs managed only 10 rushing yards on 25 carries, a crippling stat against Arizona State’s aggressive front that registered six sacks.
“We just kept shooting ourselves in the foot,” said head coach Sonny Dykes.
Three turnovers proved costly, as did the inability to sustain drives late.
Special Teams Struggles
Arizona State’s special teams nearly sabotaged the upset:
- A muffed punt by Raleek Brown pinned the Sun Devils deep.
- A 26-yard shanked punt gave TCU a short field for its first touchdown.
- Gomez missed field goals from 46 and 43 yards before nailing the game-winner.
Yet, the miscues were erased by timely plays when it mattered most.
Looking Ahead
- TCU: Hosts Colorado on October 4 in a crucial bounce-back game.
- Arizona State: Visits Utah on October 11, carrying momentum from consecutive nail-biters.
The Sun Devils’ resilience is quickly becoming their identity — and opponents are taking notice.
