Jill Biden Shares Personal Reflections in New Memoir
Former first lady Jill Biden is offering her most personal account yet of the dramatic end to her husband’s 2024 presidential campaign.
In a new memoir titled “View from the East Wing: A Memoir,” she reflects on the emotional period when President Joe Biden decided to abandon his reelection bid amid growing pressure from members of his own party.
The book, published by Gallery Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, is scheduled to be released on June 2.
Speaking briefly in a phone interview, Jill Biden said writing the memoir helped her process the intense experiences of the Biden presidency.
“It was kind of cathartic for me to write it,” she said. “I wrote about the sometimes painful — but also many beautiful — moments Joe and I shared during his presidency.”
Biden’s Decision to End His Campaign
Joe Biden had originally announced his bid for reelection in April 2023, when he was already the oldest president in U.S. history at age 80.
Questions about his age and health quickly became central issues in the campaign. Concerns intensified after a widely criticized debate performance against Republican candidate Donald Trump in June 2024.
During the debate, Biden struggled to deliver his arguments and occasionally lost his train of thought. His aides attributed the performance to illness, saying he had a cold at the time.
Despite mounting criticism, Biden initially insisted he would remain in the race.
But within weeks, the president reversed course and ended his campaign, effectively closing the final chapter of a political career that spanned more than five decades.
He later endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.
Harris ultimately lost the 2024 election to Trump.
Memoir Aims to “Set the Record Straight”
Jill Biden said her memoir attempts to present a fuller and more balanced picture of her husband’s presidency.
In a video announcement posted on social media, she said she wrote the book to “set the record straight” about the experiences inside the White House.
While she declined to discuss specific passages ahead of publication, she said the memoir recounts both difficult and meaningful moments from the administration.
The book also highlights her role in balancing personal and public responsibilities.
“It’s also a story about my being able to balance life as a working woman and as a mother, grandmother and first lady,” she said.
A First Lady Who Continued Teaching
During Joe Biden’s presidency, Jill Biden made history as the first first lady to maintain a full professional career while living in the White House.
A longtime educator, she continued teaching English and writing courses at a community college in Northern Virginia.
Throughout her four years as first lady, she taught classes twice a week while also managing public duties and advocacy efforts.
Her work focused on issues including education, military families, cancer research and women’s health.
Joe Biden’s Cancer Diagnosis
The memoir also addresses the former president’s health.
In May 2025, Joe Biden’s office announced that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had spread to his bones.
Jill Biden described the diagnosis as a shock for their family.
“The fact that it is in his bones means he will have cancer his whole lifetime,” she said.
However, she said doctors believe he will still live a normal lifespan with treatment.
Now 83, Biden continues to remain active. According to his wife, he travels to Washington regularly for meetings and speaking engagements.
Reflecting on a Historic Presidency
Beyond personal family moments, Jill Biden’s book also recounts several defining events of the Biden administration.
Her husband took office on January 20, 2021, just two weeks after the attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump who attempted to stop Congress from certifying the election results.
The early months of Biden’s presidency were also dominated by the federal response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
While the president largely worked from the White House during that period, Jill Biden traveled across the country encouraging Americans to receive vaccines.
She also continued advocacy work related to education and support for military families.
A Life in Public Service
Before becoming first lady, Jill Biden served as second lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017 during the Obama administration.
She currently chairs the Milken Institute’s Women’s Health Network.
In addition to her upcoming memoir, she has written several other books, including the 2019 memoir “Where the Light Enters,” which recounts her early relationship with Joe Biden and their life together.
She has also authored three children’s books.
