Deep Look: Trump Casts Florida Mail Ballot Amid Push To Curb Mail Voting

President Donald Trump cast a mail ballot in Florida this week while continuing to criticize mail voting and urging Congress to restrict its use nationwide.

Palm Beach County records show Trump voted by mail in Tuesday’s special election for Florida state legislative seats. His ballot was received and counted, according to local election officials.

Trump was at his South Florida estate during the early in-person voting period, which ended Sunday.

The White House did not immediately comment on the vote. Administration officials have previously said Trump’s criticism is aimed at widespread or universal mail-in voting, rather than individual voters who choose to vote by mail.

Trump Pushes Voting Restrictions

Despite using the method himself, Trump has intensified his criticism of mail-in voting. Over the past week, he described the practice as “cheating” and “corrupt as hell.”

Trump is urging Congress to pass the SAVE Act, legislation that would severely limit mail voting. The proposal would ban universal mail ballots and restrict the option to select groups such as military personnel, people with disabilities and voters traveling on Election Day.

The bill faces significant challenges in the closely divided Senate.

Trump has long criticized mail voting, particularly after his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden. Trump has repeatedly claimed fraud, though courts and election officials — including members of his own administration — found no evidence that fraud affected the outcome.

Florida Special Election

Trump does not maintain a standing request for mail ballots in Florida, meaning he must request one for each election. Records show he requested the ballot for the special election covering Florida House District 87 and Senate District 14.

Trump also issued an endorsement late Monday for Jon Maples in the House race, encouraging supporters to vote. He did not mention that he had voted by mail himself.

Broader Voting Debate

Trump has argued that the United States is unique in its use of mail voting, though dozens of countries — including several U.S. allies — allow some form of voting by mail.

The president recently called the SAVE Act the most important legislation pending in Washington, even as Congress deals with major issues including the Iran conflict and a partial Department of Homeland Security shutdown.

Trump has also suggested executive action to curb mail voting, saying last year that his administration was preparing orders aimed at limiting the practice.

Supreme Court Case Adds Pressure

The Florida vote comes as the Supreme Court considers a case involving mail ballots in Mississippi. The case centers on whether states can count ballots postmarked by Election Day but received afterward.

Trump has criticized such policies, which are currently used in multiple states and the District of Columbia.

The court’s eventual ruling could influence how mail ballots are handled in the 2026 midterm elections.

Trump’s continued criticism of mail voting — while personally using the option — underscores the ongoing political debate over election procedures and voting access ahead of future elections.
