Deep Look

Trump and Melania Renew Fight Against Jimmy Kimmel

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump are once again demanding that ABC remove late-night host Jimmy Kimmel after a controversial joke involving the first lady sparked national backlash.

The issue centers on a remark Kimmel made during a parody of the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where he joked that Melania Trump looked like she had “the glow of an expectant widow.”

The line aired just two days before an armed man attempted to storm the real White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, where Trump, Melania, and much of the nation’s political leadership were gathered.

That violent incident dramatically changed the context of the joke and intensified criticism of the comedian.

Melania Trump Says “Enough Is Enough”

Melania Trump responded forcefully on social media, accusing Kimmel of spreading hate and calling on ABC to take immediate action.

“People like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate,” she wrote.

She described his language as “hateful and violent rhetoric” designed to divide the country and said the network continues to protect him rather than hold him accountable.

“A coward, Kimmel hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him,” she added.

“Enough is enough. It is time for ABC to take a stand.”

President Trump later reposted and echoed his wife’s criticism.

Trump Calls Kimmel’s Joke “Far Beyond the Pale”

Trump used his Truth Social platform to personally attack Kimmel and demand that ABC and parent company Disney immediately fire him.

“I appreciate that so many people are incensed by Kimmel’s despicable call to violence,” Trump wrote.

He said he normally would not respond to the comedian but argued that this situation was “far beyond the pale.”

“Jimmy Kimmel should be immediately fired,” the president added.

The president framed the issue not as comedy but as a dangerous escalation in political rhetoric aimed at his family.

The Joke That Sparked the Firestorm

During Thursday’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Kimmel performed a mock White House Correspondents’ Dinner monologue while dressed in a tuxedo behind a podium.

Using edited cutaway clips of the Trump family, he joked:

“Our first lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful.”

“Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.”

He later joked about her birthday, saying she would celebrate at home by “looking out a window and whispering, ‘What have I done?’”

Another line referencing Jeffrey Epstein also drew attention.

These jokes quickly spread online and fueled outrage among Trump supporters.

Shooting at Dinner Changed Everything

Saturday night, the actual White House Correspondents’ Dinner was cut short after authorities say Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old California man armed with guns and knives, attempted to enter the Washington ballroom.

Secret Service agents responded, shots were fired, and Trump was rushed from the stage while guests took cover.

Allen was later charged with the attempted assassination of the president.

Because Kimmel’s “expectant widow” joke aired only days earlier, critics argue the remark took on a far darker meaning after the attack.

The White House now says this is part of a larger problem.

Kimmel Defends Himself on Air

Kimmel addressed the controversy during his Monday night monologue and rejected claims that he was encouraging violence.

He described the line as a simple roast about the age difference between Donald and Melania Trump.

“It was not, by any stretch of the definition, a call to assassination,” Kimmel said.

He also said he was genuinely sorry that Trump and everyone at the dinner experienced something traumatic and frightening.

“I agree that hateful and violent rhetoric is something we should reject,” he said.

Then he added a direct jab at the president:

“I think a great place to start to dial that back would be to have a conversation with your husband about it.”

White House Says Media Rhetoric Is Fueling Violence

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt also entered the debate, arguing that comments like Kimmel’s contribute to a dangerous political climate.

She said the rhetoric from Democrats and some in the media has helped normalize political violence.

“Who in their right mind says a wife would be glowing over the potential murder of her beloved husband?” Leavitt asked.

She said the comment reflects a broader problem where public figures treat violent ideas too casually.

There is no indication Kimmel was directly calling for violence, but the administration says the larger culture matters.

Conservative Groups Push for Federal Action

The National Religious Broadcasters association has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission asking for an investigation into ABC.

The group argues that influential media voices joking about violence help create an environment where unstable individuals feel justified acting on extreme ideas.

NRB President Troy Miller said:

“When influential voices joke about death or treat political opponents as disposable, it contributes to a culture where violence feels thinkable.”

The complaint adds legal and political pressure to the growing controversy.

Kimmel’s History With Trump

This is far from the first clash between Trump and Kimmel.

The late-night host has spent years making Trump the centerpiece of his political comedy.

Their conflict escalated last year after Kimmel made comments tied to the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

ABC temporarily suspended him, and several affiliate stations briefly pulled his show after pressure from FCC Chairman Brendan Carr and Trump allies.

Kimmel later returned, saying he never intended to make light of the killing but did not fully apologize.

Shortly afterward, ABC extended his contract for another year, keeping him on air through May 2027.

Late-Night TV and Political Division

Kimmel has become one of the most openly political late-night hosts on television.

Like Stephen Colbert on CBS, his show has increasingly blended entertainment with direct political commentary.

Supporters say satire should challenge powerful leaders.

Critics argue repeated personal attacks and jokes involving death cross the line—especially when directed at a sitting president facing real threats.

This latest controversy places that debate back at the center of national attention.

ABC Faces Growing Pressure

At the time of reporting, ABC had not issued a public response.

That silence is fueling frustration among Trump supporters who believe the network is protecting Kimmel rather than addressing the seriousness of the backlash.

Whether ABC responds or not, the issue has now become larger than one late-night joke.

It touches on political rhetoric, media responsibility, presidential security, and how far comedy should go during an already dangerous political moment.

For the Trump family, the answer is clear.

For Jimmy Kimmel and ABC, the pressure is only growing.
