Araújo Saves Uruguay After Frustrating Night

Uruguay avoided a shocking defeat in its opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Maxi Araújo scored a late equalizer in a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia at Hard Rock Stadium.

The South American giants entered the tournament as favorites in Group H but struggled to break down a disciplined Saudi defense for much of the evening.

Araújo finally delivered in the 80th minute, pouncing on a rebound and firing past goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais from close range to rescue a point for La Celeste.

Despite the late goal, Uruguay’s players were far from satisfied.

“We gave it away. We have to be honest,” midfielder Federico Valverde said in Spanish after the match.

“We gave away the first half,” Valverde added. “We didn’t play the way we had trained. It wasn’t what we were aiming for. We rushed things too much. We wanted to win the game in the very first minute. Sometimes you need a bit more patience and just play our game. We improved a lot in the second half.”

Saudi Arabia Strikes First

Saudi Arabia continued its reputation for causing problems for football powers on the World Cup stage.

Abdulelah Al-Amri broke the deadlock in the 41st minute after reacting quickest to a rebound following a save by veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.

The defender’s celebration reflected the significance of the moment as he fell to his knees amid loud cheers from Saudi supporters.

Although vastly outnumbered in the stands by Uruguay fans, the Green Falcons’ supporters made their presence felt throughout the match.

The performance revived memories of Saudi Arabia’s stunning victory over Argentina at the 2022 World Cup — one of the biggest upsets in tournament history.

While Monday’s result lacked that same drama, earning a point against Uruguay represented another impressive achievement.

Al-Owais Stands Tall in Goal

Much of Saudi Arabia’s success came thanks to goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais, who delivered several outstanding saves.

He denied Federico Viñas from close range in the first half and later got fingertips to a dangerous effort from Manuel Ugarte in the 61st minute.

In stoppage time, Al-Owais again preserved the draw by turning away a late attempt from Valverde.

Saudi Arabia coach Georgios Donis praised his team’s effort against a powerful opponent.

“Uruguay is a team that is very energetic,” Donis said through an interpreter. “The players are well experienced, and there is depth on the bench. … When you’re faced with such an opponent, getting one point is a positive.”

Donis, who replaced Hervé Renard only two months ago, said his squad remains a work in progress.

“I need to get to know my team better,” he said. “I need to create a team that is competitive, and it only makes sense that we need time to do this. Today’s outcome gives us an advantage.”

Bielsa Frustrated by Missed Opportunities

Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa acknowledged that his side failed to impose itself despite dominating possession and chances.

La Celeste controlled the ball for most of the match and fired 29 shots, but lacked efficiency in front of goal.

“When a team that is supposed to make a difference cannot do it, in terms of being dangerous or dominating the ball,” Bielsa said through an interpreter, “then the weaker team actually dares to do something.”

The draw highlighted concerns about Uruguay’s finishing and ability to break down organized defenses.

Group H Suddenly Wide Open

The result capped a remarkable day in Group H after World Cup debutant Cape Verde stunned Spain with a 0-0 draw earlier in Atlanta.

Saudi Arabia coach Donis acknowledged the significance of those results.

“The draw involving Spain may be the biggest surprise in this World Cup,” he said. “Cape Verde was very competitive, very strong. It’s not like the (group) favorites changed. It’s Spain and Uruguay.”

With both favorites dropping points in their opening matches, the race for knockout-stage qualification is now far more competitive than many expected.

The matchup also connected different eras of World Cup history. Uruguay hosted the inaugural tournament in 1930 and will stage a centennial match in 2030, while Saudi Arabia is set to host the World Cup in 2034.

Among those in attendance were FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Miami Heat star Bam Adebayo, former NFL standout Chad Ochocinco and longtime Uruguay legend Luis Suárez.
