Deep Look

Trump Signals Return of Russian Oil Sanctions

President Donald Trump indicated Tuesday that the United States may soon restore sanctions on Russian oil shipments as global energy markets stabilize following progress on an Iran agreement.

Speaking at the Group of Seven summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, Trump suggested that improved oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz could give Washington more flexibility to pressure Moscow economically.

“Soon we’ll be able to do that because the oil is now flowing,” Trump told reporters. “We’re in a position to do that soon.”

The United States had temporarily eased some sanctions on Russian oil exports earlier this year after oil prices surged amid the conflict involving Iran and disruptions in the Gulf region.

With hopes rising that the Strait of Hormuz will reopen fully, the administration appears ready to revisit tougher measures against Russia.

Ukraine Returns to the Top of the G7 Agenda

After weeks dominated by Middle East developments, Ukraine regained center stage during G7 discussions.

Trump said the Iran conflict would soon be “back in the rearview mirror,” allowing leaders to concentrate once again on Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined G7 leaders for a working session focused on military support and pressure on Moscow.

According to summit discussions, leaders agreed to intensify efforts against Russia’s energy sector and maintain support for Kyiv.

Zelenskyy accused Moscow of lacking genuine interest in peace.

“The entire ‘Seven’ supports Ukraine unanimously today,” Zelenskyy said.

He also criticized Russia’s negotiating posture, describing its actions as “a game.”

Patriot Missiles and Defense Support Remain Critical

One of the summit’s key outcomes involved discussions on strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.

Zelenskyy said leaders discussed increasing supplies of Patriot missile systems and potentially expanding production through licensing agreements.

Patriot missiles have become a crucial defense tool against Russian missile attacks targeting Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

As U.S. support has shifted under Trump’s administration, European allies including France, Germany and Britain have become Ukraine’s primary providers of military and financial assistance.

Despite expressing frustration with the prolonged conflict, Trump reiterated his desire to seek a resolution.

“The whole thing is ridiculous,” Trump said. “So, yeah, I’m going to do whatever I can.”

Russia Faces New Economic Pressure

The United Kingdom unveiled a fresh package of sanctions targeting Russia’s so-called shadow fleet—ships used to transport oil and gas while bypassing Western restrictions.

The measures also target financial networks helping Moscow evade sanctions.

The announcement came shortly after Russia launched hundreds of drones and missiles against Ukrainian cities, killing civilians and damaging infrastructure.

The renewed attacks underscored the continuing challenges facing peace negotiations.

Trump previously campaigned on ending the Russia-Ukraine war quickly but has since acknowledged that reaching a settlement has proven more difficult than anticipated.

Iran Deal Still Shapes Global Diplomacy

Even as Ukraine dominated Tuesday’s agenda, the emerging U.S.-Iran agreement remained a major topic at the summit.

Trump signaled willingness to submit the agreement to Congress for review amid growing scrutiny on Capitol Hill.

“I like the idea, send it to Congress please,” Trump said. “I mean who wouldn’t approve it?”

Lawmakers from both parties have requested more details regarding nuclear provisions, sanctions relief and enforcement mechanisms.

Trump also voiced frustration with Israel’s ongoing military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon.

“I’m not happy with the way Israel has handled themselves with Lebanon and with Hezbollah,” Trump said.

“They should have been able to deal with them faster,” he added. “It just goes on forever. And when that happens, it throws a negative light on the big deal. And that’s the deal with Iran.”

Meanwhile, France and Britain continue pushing plans to restore maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz once conditions permit.

With Ukraine, Iran and global energy markets increasingly intertwined, G7 leaders face the difficult task of balancing diplomacy, security and economic stability.
