Deep Look

Mbappé Ignites France After Slow Start

Kylian Mbappé once again delivered on soccer’s biggest stage.

After a quiet opening half, the French superstar erupted for two second-half goals as France defeated Senegal 3-1 Tuesday night in its opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The victory gave France a strong start in its pursuit of a third consecutive appearance in the World Cup final and potentially a second title in three tournaments.

France struggled to find rhythm early, managing only one shot in the first half while Senegal controlled much of the play.

But when France needed a spark, Mbappé provided it.

“He could have scored four or five goals,” France coach Didier Deschamps said after the match. “But we’re happy with two goals.”

A World Cup Milestone for Mbappé

Mbappé’s first goal came in the 66th minute.

The 27-year-old forward burst past Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly, latched onto a diagonal pass from Michael Olise and calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Édouard Mendy.

The strike marked Mbappé’s 14th career World Cup goal, moving him ahead of Brazilian legend Pelé on the all-time scoring list.

His celebration drew nearly as much attention as the goal itself.

Before the tournament, actor James Corden had challenged Mbappé during an interview to celebrate his next World Cup goal by pretending to play the flute—a nod to the French star’s childhood music lessons.

Mbappé kept his promise.

After scoring, he ran toward the corner flag and mimicked playing a flute, delighting fans inside MetLife Stadium.

France Pulls Away Late

France seized control after Mbappé’s opener.

Substitute Bradley Barcola doubled the lead in the 82nd minute, scoring just two minutes after entering the match.

Senegal briefly threatened a comeback when Ibrahim Mbaye scored deep into stoppage time.

But Mbappé extinguished any hopes almost immediately.

Only 68 seconds later, he unleashed a spectacular right-footed strike from nearly 30 yards out. The shot dipped perfectly beneath the crossbar and beyond Mendy’s reach.

“A crazy goal,” French defender William Saliba said.

The second goal showcased why Mbappé remains one of the world’s most dangerous attacking players.

History Within Reach

Mbappé’s scoring feats continue to place him among soccer’s all-time greats.

His 14 World Cup goals temporarily moved him past Lionel Messi and French legend Just Fontaine before Messi later added three goals for Argentina to reclaim the advantage.

Mbappé now sits tied with German great Gerd Müller on the World Cup scoring charts.

Only Brazil’s Ronaldo (15), Messi (16) and Germany’s Miroslav Klose (16) remain ahead of him.

The French striker also became France’s all-time leading scorer with 58 international goals, surpassing Olivier Giroud.

“He really is able to tip the scales and bring his team to victory,” Deschamps said.

Senegal Shows Promise Despite Defeat

While the result favored France, Senegal demonstrated why it remains one of Africa’s strongest football nations.

The Lions of Teranga controlled much of the opening half and nearly took the lead when Nicolas Jackson’s effort struck the post in the 25th minute.

Coach Pape Thiaw lamented missed opportunities.

“If we had been more efficient, by halftime, we would have been able to lead 1- or 2-nil,” he said.

Visa restrictions imposed by the U.S. government limited travel for many Senegal supporters, but those in attendance made their presence felt at MetLife Stadium.

What Comes Next

France now turns its attention to its next Group I match against Iraq in Philadelphia.

Senegal will remain at MetLife Stadium to face Norway as it looks to rebound and strengthen its chances of advancing to the knockout rounds.

With Mbappé in top form and chasing World Cup history, France once again appears poised to challenge for soccer’s biggest prize.
