One fun yearly thing we do in the United States is look back at the year from the ever-clear hindsight of December, and sometimes looking back is very cringe-worthy, but sometimes there are true inspiration in peoples words, notable Americans among the lucky this year are Spears, McConnell, and Osaka. This gives us a way of gazing back upon a year, that even though we lived it, people are so busy they forget sometimes. As reported by the AP:

Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was urging fellow Republicans to abandon their effort to overrule the election victory of President Joe Biden when he said: “The voters, the courts, and the states have all spoken.”

Moments later, the insurrection began, forcing the Capitol’s evacuation.

The list is a supplement to The New Yale Book of Quotations, which was edited by Shapiro and published by Yale University Press.
