Trump got a letter: ‘I’m Target of Jan. 6 Probe’

Former President Donald Trump said in a social media post that he’s been informed by special counsel Jack Smith that he is a target of the criminal investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 election. “Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment,” Trump posted on Truth Social. Trump also received a target letter earlier this year from Smith before he was indicted in the investigation into the mishandling of classified documents. The Associated Press has the story:

Former President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he has received a letter informing him that he is a target of the Justice Department’s investigation into efforts to undo the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Trump said he has received a letter from Special Counsel Jack Smith stating that he is a target in the federal grand jury investigation into the events leading up to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Trump did not provide evidence backing the assertion. Smith’s office did not immediately comment.

Trump made the claim in a post on his Truth Social platform.

Smith already has criminally charged Trump with about two dozen crimes related to retaining classified documents when he left the White House.

Trump also suggested he may soon face indictment for the Jan. 6 probe, which is focused on Trump’s efforts to overturn his loss in the 2020 election to President Joe Biden. Trump posted his statement on his Truth Social account.

“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social site.

A spokesman for Smith did not immediately respond to a request for a comment.

Trump is the leading contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

A hearing in his classified documents criminal case is set for Tuesday in Florida federal court.

Trump’s lawyers have asked this any trial in that case take place after the 2024 election. Smith’s prosecutors oppose that bid.
