Trump to Announce Kennedy Center Honorees, Hints Renovations

Deep Look

President Donald Trump will make a high-profile appearance at the Kennedy Center on Wednesday as the recipients of the annual Honors awards are revealed. This will be Trump’s third visit to the venue since January, but his first in his new role as chairman, a position he assumed after dismissing the center’s board of trustees and replacing them with his own appointees.

In a Truth Social post on Tuesday, Trump teased not only the award announcement but also possible renovations to the building, formally known as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

“GREAT Nominees for the TRUMP/KENNEDY CENTER, whoops, I mean, KENNEDY CENTER, AWARDS,” he wrote, hinting at a tongue-in-cheek rebranding. He claimed the building had “fallen on hard times” physically but promised it would soon be “back to the absolute TOP LEVEL of luxury, glamour, and entertainment.”

The Kennedy Center itself fueled speculation with its own statement, praising Trump’s “advocacy” and suggesting a construction project will be unveiled.

“Thanks to his advocacy, our beautiful building will undergo renovations to restore its prestige and grandeur,” the venue’s social media post read.

From Boycott to Boardroom

Trump’s involvement with the Kennedy Center marks a sharp departure from his first term, when he avoided the Honors ceremony entirely after several artists refused to attend in protest of his administration. Honorees at that time included outspoken critics like Cher, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Sally Field.

Traditionally, a bipartisan advisory committee selects award recipients. However, it’s unclear whether that process was followed this year. The Kennedy Center did not respond to questions about how the honorees were chosen. Instead, it posted a cryptic teaser:

“Coming Soon … A country music icon, an Englishman, a New York City Rock band, a dance Queen and a multi-billion dollar Actor walk into the Kennedy Center Opera House …”

Trump has previously suggested names such as singer-songwriter Paul Anka — who canceled a performance at his first inauguration — and actor Sylvester Stallone, one of three Hollywood figures he appointed as cultural ambassadors earlier this year.

Institutional Changes and Backlash

Since taking office for a second term, Trump has moved aggressively to reshape the Kennedy Center’s leadership and programming. In addition to installing himself as chairman, he has indicated that he will personally influence programming decisions and has vowed to end drag performances at the venue.

These actions have prompted backlash from parts of the arts community. The producers of the hit musical Hamilton canceled their planned 2026 staging at the center, citing Trump’s “aggressive takeover” of its leadership. Other cancellations include appearances by actor Issa Rae, musician Rhiannon Giddens, and author Louise Penny.

In March, Trump criticized the Kennedy Center’s condition during a visit, calling it in “tremendous disrepair” and pledging to restore it. The building, completed in 1971 as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy, has undergone periodic upgrades but has never faced a leadership-driven renovation on this scale.

Political Moves and Name Changes

Trump’s influence has also extended to Congress. House Republicans recently added an amendment to a spending bill — which Trump signed in July — to rename the Opera House inside the Kennedy Center after former First Lady Melania Trump. While that change has not yet taken effect, a separate proposal to rename the entire Kennedy Center after Trump drew sharp criticism, including from Maria Shriver, a niece of President Kennedy, who called it “insane.”

In April, the Kennedy Center swapped its long-standing rainbow-colored exterior lights for a permanent red, white, and blue display, a change seen by some as symbolic of the Trump era at the institution.

A Storied Tradition Amid Shifting Politics

The Kennedy Center Honors, established in 1978, have celebrated a broad array of cultural icons, from ballet master George Balanchine to actors Tom Hanks and Aretha Franklin. Past presidents of both political parties have attended, even when honorees held opposing political views.

Trump’s new hands-on approach marks a break from that tradition, intertwining the ceremonial prestige of the Honors with his own political and personal brand. As renovations and possible rebranding loom, the future of the Kennedy Center under his leadership appears set for both physical and cultural transformation.
