Deep Look:
White House Demands Democrats Stop ‘Demonizing’ ICE after Dallas Attack
A deadly shooting at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas, Texas, has ignited a national conversation about politically motivated violence and the consequences of incendiary rhetoric targeting federal law enforcement agencies.
Homeland Security says that two detainees were killed and another was critically injured Wednesday morning after a shooting at a Dallas immigration facility.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, left one detainee dead and two others injured, and prompted immediate reactions from high-profile figures, including Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and White House officials.
FBI Calls Shooting a “Targeted Attack”
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the shooting is being investigated as a deliberate and targeted act of violence. FBI Special Agent in Charge Joseph Rothrock confirmed in a press briefing that investigators recovered bullet casings containing anti-ICE messages near the shooter.
“What I can also share with you is that early evidence we have seen from the rounds found near the suspected shooter contain messages that are anti-ICE in nature,” Rothrock said. “This is just the most recent example of this type of attack.”
The assailant, who has not yet been publicly identified, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after the attack. According to ICE sources, the incident unfolded as officers were in the process of transferring detainees into the facility. The three victims were inside a law enforcement transport van at the time of the attack. One of the detainees later succumbed to injuries sustained in the shooting.
Cruz: “Politically Motivated Violence Must Stop”
At a press conference held shortly after the attack, Sen. Ted Cruz condemned the act and connected it to a broader pattern of recent politically driven violence.
“Violence is wrong, and politically motivated violence is wrong,” Cruz said. “It was two weeks ago today that we saw a political assassination in Utah that tore the heart out of much of this country,” he added, referring to the September 10 assassination of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University.
Cruz noted that this was the third targeted shooting in Texas directed at either ICE or Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facilities this year. He sharply criticized public figures who have used anti-ICE rhetoric, suggesting such language may incite violence.
“To every politician who is using rhetoric, demonizing ICE and demonizing CBP – stop,” Cruz urged. “To every politician demanding that ICE agents be doxed and calling for people to go after their families – stop.”
He thanked law enforcement for their response and emphasized the need to reduce political polarization: “In America, we disagree. That’s fine. But your political opponents are not Nazis. We need to learn to work together without demonizing each other.”
White House: ‘Stop Demonizing ICE’
The White House echoed Cruz’s concerns, particularly calling on Democrats to reconsider their messaging regarding immigration enforcement officers.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement, “Democrats must stop demonizing the heroic men and women of ICE who are just doing their jobs to keep Americans safe.” She shared a message on social media that read, “I Stand With ICE,” alongside a photo supporting the agency.
The White House response reflects growing bipartisan concerns over escalating hostility toward federal agents who work in immigration enforcement. The Dallas incident has prompted fears of copycat attacks and intensified scrutiny on the rhetoric surrounding immigration debates.
A Pattern of Violence?
This latest tragedy marks at least the third violent incident targeting ICE or CBP in Texas in recent months. FBI Director Kash Patel referenced a July ambush in Prairieland, Texas, where ICE officers were similarly targeted.
“These despicable, politically motivated attacks against law enforcement are not a one-off,” Patel said. “The FBI and our partners will lead investigative efforts to ensure that those who target our law enforcement are pursued and brought to the fullest extent of justice.”
The frequency and intensity of these attacks are raising urgent questions about how political discourse—especially related to immigration—can directly impact the safety of federal employees and the communities they serve.
