Deep Look
MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards added another accolade to his fast-growing career Thursday night, becoming the third-youngest player in NBA history to reach 10,000 career points.
The 24-year-old star hit the mark with a 13-foot fadeaway jumper from the baseline midway through the fourth quarter in a 131–122 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. At 24 years and 156 days old, Edwards trails only LeBron James (23 years, 59 days) and Kevin Durant (24 years, 33 days) in reaching the milestone at such a young age.
Edwards now becomes part of a rare group of seven players to record 10,000 points before turning 25. Alongside James and Durant, the exclusive list includes Kobe Bryant, Luka Doncic, Tracy McGrady, and Carmelo Anthony.
“To be honest, it’s cool, but I know I’ve got a lot more to go, so it’s really nothing, for real,” Edwards said after the game. “I’m kind of sick that I got in front of Kobe. I wished I would’ve waited like 100 days or something, but yeah, it’s all good.”
Edwards scored 25 points, added nine assists, and grabbed seven rebounds in the win. He shot 10-for-20 from the field and 4-for-7 from three-point range, contributing to season-high shooting percentages for Minnesota: 57% from the floor and 53% from beyond the arc.
Coach Chris Finch praised Edwards’ natural scoring ability, pointing back to a 40-point performance in Phoenix during his rookie year.
“The scoring comes natural to him in a lot of ways,” Finch said. “At that point in time you knew there was something inside him where he could get to that.”
Edwards entered the NBA as the first overall pick in the 2020 draft and made his debut at age 19. Since then, his rapid scoring ascent has placed him among elite company. He reached the 10,000-point mark in 412 games — the 28th-fastest in NBA history. Among active players, only Luka Doncic (358), LeBron James (368), Joel Embiid (373), Kevin Durant (381), Trae Young (390), and Donovan Mitchell (410) got there faster.
In the Timberwolves’ franchise history, only Kevin Garnett and Karl-Anthony Towns have reached the 10,000-point milestone. Edwards becomes the third to do so in a Minnesota uniform, further solidifying his place among the team’s all-time greats.
While he downplayed the personal significance, the achievement signals Edwards’ growing influence as a franchise cornerstone and a face of the league’s next generation.
