Shooting Near Middle School Leaves Two Dead
A deadly shooting at a park near a middle school in Winston-Salem left at least two people dead Monday morning, prompting a large police response and raising concerns in the surrounding community.
The incident occurred at Leinbach Park, located on Robinhood Road, close to Jefferson Middle School.
Authorities from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation confirmed the fatalities and said the situation is still under investigation.
Police emphasized that the shooting appears to be an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the general public.
Planned Fight May Have Led to Gunfire
According to Winston-Salem Police Assistant Chief Jake Swaim, the violence may have begun as a planned confrontation between juveniles.
“What we have confirmed at this point (is) that two juveniles agreed to meet at the park to fight,” Swaim said.
Authorities initially received a call around 9:52 a.m. reporting a fight in progress at the park.
However, as officers were responding, the situation escalated dramatically.
“The call was upgraded to a shooting,” Swaim said.
Police later stated that the altercation intensified, with multiple individuals opening fire.
“The situation escalated, and multiple individuals began shooting at each other,” the Winston-Salem Police Department said in a social media update.
Multiple Individuals Identified as Investigation Continues
Law enforcement officials said several individuals connected to the shooting — including both victims and suspects — have already been identified and located.
Authorities have not yet released further details about those involved or what led to the escalation.
The investigation remains active as police work to piece together the sequence of events and determine possible charges.
Officials have not said whether additional arrests are expected.
Nearby Schools Remain Open and Safe
Despite the proximity of the shooting to local schools, officials said there was no immediate danger to students.
Both Jefferson Middle School and Mount Tabor High School continued operating normally.
“The schools are safe,” Swaim said.
However, authorities advised parents picking up children from Jefferson Middle School to use alternate routes, as the Robinhood Road entrance was blocked due to the police response.
Community Shaken by Violence
The shooting has left residents in the area shaken, particularly given its proximity to schools and the involvement of young people.
While police have described the event as isolated, the incident highlights ongoing concerns about youth violence and access to firearms.
Officials have not yet released the identities of the victims or suspects, and it remains unclear what specific factors led the confrontation to escalate into a deadly shooting.
As investigators continue their work, the community is left grappling with the aftermath of a tragedy that unfolded in broad daylight near a place typically associated with safety and recreation.
