Vinícius Continues Outstanding Tournament
Vinícius Júnior continued his outstanding form by scoring in his third consecutive group-stage match.
His first goal came just seven minutes into the contest after Scotland made an early defensive mistake. The Brazilian winger collected a pass from 19-year-old striker Rayan, slipped around goalkeeper Angus Gunn with a quick touch and calmly finished into an open net.
He struck again moments before halftime, heading home from close range after another Scottish defensive error gave Brazil a comfortable 2-0 lead entering the break.
“It’s always important to be scoring goals,” Vinícius said in Portuguese. “It’s important to be playing great matches, and I managed to do that. I was able to perform very well and improve. Throughout my years with the national team, there were times when I couldn’t quite show my true game.”
Cunha Adds Insurance as Brazil Controls Match
Matheus Cunha added Brazil’s third goal to cap another efficient attacking display from Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.
After beginning the tournament with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Morocco, Brazil has steadily improved with back-to-back 3-0 victories entering the knockout rounds.
Ancelotti emphasized that tournament success—not style points—remains Brazil’s primary objective.
“We are working to play the best that we can,” he said. “But the goal is not to play well. We know that playing well is easier to win, but the goal is to win. … If we win the World Cup, we played well. If we don’t win the World Cup, we played really bad.”
Neymar Makes Long-Awaited Return
One of the evening’s biggest moments came in the 76th minute when Neymar entered the match, making his first appearance of the tournament after missing Brazil’s opening two games with a right calf injury.
Fans at Hard Rock Stadium loudly chanted his name as he warmed up along the sideline before erupting when the veteran forward entered the match.
The appearance marked another milestone in Neymar’s international career. Brazil’s all-time leading scorer has now made 130 appearances for the national team while scoring 79 international goals.
Ancelotti was pleased to see the veteran back on the field.
“I think he deserved the opportunity to play, which is why I gave him the opportunity to play,” Ancelotti said through an interpreter. “I think he did well even though he played for just a few minutes.”
Scotland’s World Cup Run Ends
Scotland’s return to the World Cup ended in disappointment as the nation once again failed to advance beyond the group stage.
Despite energetic support from the traveling “Tartan Army,” Scotland struggled to contain Brazil’s speed and capitalized on few offensive opportunities.
The defeat means Scotland has now failed to progress from the group phase in all nine of its World Cup appearances.
“We knew they were a top side,” Scotland defender Nathan Patterson said. “They have massive threats. We were trying to nullify the threats — and obviously giving them easy goals is not what you need.”
Morocco Also Advances
Brazil will enter the knockout stage as Group C champion, while Morocco claimed the second automatic qualification spot after rallying to defeat Haiti 4-2.
With Vinícius in top form and Neymar returning to fitness, Brazil heads into the elimination rounds appearing to gain momentum as it pursues its first World Cup championship since lifting the trophy in 2002.
