Lakers Overcome Injuries to Advance

The Los Angeles Lakers pushed past adversity to eliminate the Houston Rockets in six games, securing a spot in the Western Conference semifinals. The series victory marks the team’s first trip to the second round since 2023.

Early in April, the outlook appeared grim when Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves — two of the team’s primary scorers — suffered injuries in the same game. The setback could have derailed the Lakers’ postseason hopes, but instead, the team regrouped and found a way forward.

Coach JJ Redick reflected on that moment, acknowledging the uncertainty but praising his team’s response.

LeBron James Delivers Another Signature Performance

At the center of the Lakers’ success was LeBron James, who delivered yet another standout performance in Game 6. The veteran star scored 28 points and helped anchor a defensive effort that limited Houston to its lowest scoring output of the season in a 98-78 win.

“It speaks to his greatness,” Redick said. “To me, he’s had the greatest career of any NBA player. You can argue all you want and I really don’t care to postulate on who’s the greatest of all time, but he’s one of, if not the greatest of all time.”

“And for him to do it again and answer the bell again, it’s really — it’s baffling in some ways,” Redick continued.

At 41, James continues to perform at an elite level, carrying a heavy workload throughout the series.

Defense and Depth Prove Crucial

While James led the scoring, the Lakers’ defense played a defining role in the series-clinching victory. The team’s ability to shut down Houston’s offense underscored its resilience and adaptability.

The Lakers surged to a 3-0 lead early in the series before the Rockets battled back to force a sixth game. Houston faced its own challenges, including the absence of Kevin Durant for most of the matchup.

Despite losing momentum briefly, Los Angeles regrouped and closed out the series with authority.

Key Contributions Despite Injuries

The Lakers managed the entire series without Luka Doncic, a major blow considering his offensive production during the regular season. Austin Reaves, who also suffered an injury, returned for the final two games and provided a timely boost.

Together, Doncic and Reaves averaged more than 56 points per game during the regular season, making their absence particularly significant.

Redick credited the leadership of both LeBron James and Marcus Smart for keeping the team focused during difficult stretches.

“For us to be written off a few weeks ago and to win a playoff series is a big deal,” Redick said. “And it just speaks to the character of our team and the leaders of our team that they didn’t let go of the rope.”

Marcus Smart Highlights Team Resilience

Marcus Smart, in his first season with the Lakers, emphasized the team’s unity and determination in overcoming adversity.

“It means everything,” he said. “It shows our resilience and it shows the belief that we have our next man up… and it just shows that no matter how depleted we are, we’re always going to go out there and compete and give it everything we got.”

The team’s collective effort has become a defining feature of its playoff run.

Semifinal Matchup Set Against Thunder

The Lakers will now face the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder in the next round, presenting a new and significant challenge.

The schedule for the series shifted slightly after a dramatic finish in another playoff matchup. Toronto’s RJ Barrett hit a last-second 3-pointer to force a Game 7 against Cleveland, delaying the Lakers’ next series.

LeBron James appreciated the extra rest.

“Thanks to Toronto,” James said. “Thank you, RJ Barrett. Appreciate it. Haven’t seen a shot in Toronto like that since Kawhi (Leonard).”

Rest and Preparation Key for Next Round

After averaging 38.5 minutes per game during the series, James welcomed the additional recovery time.

“Heck yeah,” he said. “I can go on the golf course now. That’s what I’m thinking about.”

Despite the lighter moment, James acknowledged the difficulty of the upcoming matchup.

“It’s the defending champion,” he said. “So, it’s a tall task.”

With the Thunder well-rested after sweeping their previous series, the Lakers will need to maintain their intensity and cohesion.
