Deep Look

Switzerland Clinches Group B With Victory Over Canada

Switzerland secured first place in Group B with a 2-1 victory over host nation Canada on Wednesday night, earning a favorable draw in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage while ending Canada’s hopes of remaining on home soil for the Round of 32.

The Swiss finished atop the group and will remain in Vancouver, where they will return on July 2 to face one of the tournament’s eight best third-place finishers.

Canada, meanwhile, still celebrated a historic achievement despite the defeat, advancing beyond the group stage for the first time in national team history. The Canadians will now travel to Inglewood, California, to face South Africa in the Round of 32 after the African side defeated South Korea 1-0 to finish second in Group A.

“I think that we deserve to be where we are right now,” Switzerland coach Murat Yakin said. “In three days from now, we will know the opponent of the next match, and now we have the possibility to watch this tournament, and to watch the matches, and we will take what we will get.”

Swiss Strike Early in Second Half

After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Switzerland wasted little time breaking the deadlock.

Rubén Vargas scored just 40 seconds into the second half with a shot that slipped past Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau, struck the post and bounced into the net.

The goal shifted momentum firmly toward the Swiss.

Switzerland doubled its advantage in the 57th minute when Breel Embolo delivered a cross to Johan Manzambi, whose shot slipped through Crépeau’s hands for a 2-0 lead.

The goal silenced the sellout crowd dressed largely in Canadian red, which included Prime Minister Mark Carney and CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani.

Canada’s Late Push Falls Short

Canada mounted a late rally after substitute Promise David scored in the 76th minute.

Making an immediate impact after entering the match, David volleyed home with his first touch to cut the deficit to one goal.

The Canadians pressed hard during the closing minutes, creating several scoring opportunities, but could not find an equalizer that would have allowed them to finish atop the group and remain in Vancouver for the next round.

“We wanted to be here in Vancouver, but we still have a massive opportunity ahead of us to find a way to still electrify the nation, even though it’ll be from Los Angeles,” Canada coach Jesse Marsch said.

Manzambi Continues Breakout Tournament

Twenty-year-old midfielder Johan Manzambi continued his emergence as one of the tournament’s brightest young stars.

After scoring twice as a substitute in Switzerland’s 4-1 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina, Manzambi earned a place in the starting lineup and rewarded coach Murat Yakin with another important goal.

His performances have provided Switzerland with additional attacking depth as the knockout rounds approach.

Yakin credited his team for improving throughout the tournament.

“We needed some time to get really into this tournament, for many nations that was the case,” Yakin said. “There were big teams who won against small countries, so we really needed to get into this tournament fast, and the way we play football now, I’m very happy with that.”

Canada Makes History Despite Defeat

Although disappointed not to win the group, Canada continues to enjoy its most successful World Cup campaign ever.

After opening with a 2-2 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina and earning a historic 6-0 victory over Qatar, the Canadians secured enough points to reach the knockout stage for the first time.

The achievement has been especially impressive given the team’s injury challenges, including the loss of midfielder Ismaël Koné, who suffered a broken left leg during the win over Qatar. Koné attended Wednesday’s match on crutches to support his teammates.

“We have to give our team a lot of credit. We’ve had a lot of injuries, we’ve had a lot of adversity, we’ve had a lot of injuries, we’ve had to manage a lot of different situations,” Marsch said. “We still got a really good point in the first game, we had a fantastic performance against Qatar and on another day, even though we go down 2-0, maybe we get a goal and maybe we win the group. It was just a matter of fine margins.”

Group B Final Standings

Switzerland finished atop Group B after recovering from an opening 1-1 draw against Qatar and following it with victories over Bosnia-Herzegovina and Canada.

Canada claimed second place and advanced to the knockout stage, while Bosnia-Herzegovina remained in contention as one of the tournament’s best third-place teams after defeating Qatar 3-1.

Qatar finished bottom of the group and was eliminated.
